Project Overview:

The objective of this project is to install Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) along power transmission lines in Kiambu, Kenya, using specialized equipment like pullers and tensioners. OPGW will be used to:

  • Enhance Communication: Enable the transmission of data for monitoring and control purposes along the transmission lines.
  • Grounding and Protection: Serve as a lightning protection system by grounding the electrical conductors of the transmission line.
  • Reliability: Improve the overall reliability and efficiency of the electrical grid in Kiambu by integrating high-speed communication and grounding functions into one component

Components of OPGW:

OPGW is a specialized cable that has both optical fiber and grounding wire components. The cable has the following parts:

  • Optical Fibers: These fibers carry data and communication signals, allowing for real-time monitoring, communication, and control of power grid operations.
  • Ground Wire: The wire serves as a grounding mechanism, protecting the transmission line from lightning strikes and electrical faults.
  • Aramid Strength Members: These components are used for added tensile strength to withstand mechanical stress during installation and operation.
  • Conductor: Usually made of aluminum or steel, this part is responsible for providing mechanical strength and conductivity in the power transmission system.
